ARABLE PLANT WALK

Slade Farm is proud to be part of the Nature Network Fund, a Welsh Government initiative delivered by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

This fund supports projects that protect and restore Wales’ most important habitats and species. At Slade Farm, we’re using this opportunity to bring back some of our most threatened native wildlife – including rare arable plants that were once common in traditional farming landscapes.

Many rare arable plants have declined dramatically due to modern agricultural practices. These plants thrive in disturbed, low-input soils and are vital for supporting a wide range of insects, birds, and other wildlife.

With the help of the Nature Network Fund, we’re managing fields specifically to encourage their return – by reducing chemical inputs, carefully timing cultivation, and creating fallow margins. Thank you for visiting and being part of our effort to give these precious species a home once again.

Can you spot these ?

Common Fumitory

A delicate annual arable plant, recognisable by its finely divided, fern-like leaves and small pink to purple flowers with dark tips, it typically blooms from spring to early autumn. It has a long history of use in herbal medicine, particularly for liver and digestive health.

Field Madder

A low-growing annual plant, easily recognised by its whorled leaves and small, star-shaped, pale pink to lilac flowers that bloom from spring to early summer. It's ground cover that helps reduce soil erosion.

Blue Scarlet Pimpernel

It is a variant of the more common scarlet pimpernel, but is distinguished by its striking deep blue flowers with red or purple centres, which open only in sunlight. The plant has small, ovate leaves arranged in opposite pairs along square stems and typically flowers from late spring to early autumn.
